A nice weekend

What a nice weekend we had at home!  We have established a comfortable routine with Stella and she seems to be settled and secure.   I took her to work with me during the day last week and I noticed that her initial reaction to being in another new environment was to go a bit crazy.  There is a big room to run in, which is a good thing, but she spent a lot of time trying to sink her teeth into everything in her path, including a 17 pound cat that wasn't interested in being chewed on.  I remember Jan's book telling us that a puppy's new environment should be kept small and gradually increased so that you can watch them and catch toilet "accidents" before they happen and  also give them time to become secure and relaxed.  I could definetely see her anxiety in having  this huge new space to roam about in.  At home we have put a child's gate between the kitchen and living room so Stella can see us in the living room and yet have a nice area she was familiar with and feels safe in. By the end of the week at work she had settled down quite a bit, and the cat likes to engage in "catch me if you can" games.
We have been leaving her alone at home in her crate for short periods and after some initial whimpering and crying she settles in.   She is always overjoyed to see us when we return and wants immediate attention when let out of the crate but we ignore her until she calms down to give her the clear signal that separations are nothing to fear and are a normal part of life. I have noticed that, already, she is less and less frantic each time it happens and we can call her to us for much loving and attention sooner.

I have been working on the "Come" and "Sit" commands each day.  On Sunday we had our first romp in the yard with a frisbee.  She is going to be a very athletic dog and runs like lightening already.  And, as you can see, a wonderful new development just today; Gordo has allowed her to sleep in the same bed with him. I think Stella knew all along he couldn't hold out forever!!!
