Stella's visits to the Vet.
This week I took Stella to the Vet clinic twice for "social visits". I wanted her to meet Dr. Boer and his staff a couple of times before the real appointment. Gordo is terrified of them all and the place so I am trying to avoid that with Stella. So today we went for her first check up and shots. She did very well and did not seem overly anxious. She weighs five pounds and everything looks good. Dr. Boer said that I have a very strong willed little dog on my hands which I am beginning to really observe myself. So much for all the times I went to visit her litter to pick out the most docile puppy! Maybe you just can't get a really good idea until they get older and truly start to develop distinct personalities. I have noticed that when she wants something like her food or to not be held she is very determined and lets you know it by barking or squirming. However, I have also noticed that she will settle down after the initial display of will. I think she is a puppy who is, what Jan Fennell in her book "The Seven Ages of Your Dog" calls a resistance fighter. They will fight you at first and then eventually comply and settle down. She say this dog will present a few problems but will respond to the right signals. All the more reason to start her off on the right foot with Amichien Bonding. I have been working on the "Come" and "Sit" commands using tiny food rewards. She is very food motivated so that has helped. If I can get her to pay attention to me and not her toys she gets it right every time.
I've posted a photo of Stella and her new friend; a big stuffed Jack Russell named Olive. Stella sleeps with her and loves to chew on her ears. It's a poor substitute for a real dog buddy but Gordo just hasn't come around yet. Stella is being very patient and continues to try to win him. Last night we were playing with both dogs, throwing their favorite squeaky toys, and Gordo was really getting into it, where as before, if Stella got in on the action, he would just walk away. So...patience....we keep telling ourselves they will work it out.
